Brushcutting Tips

06/02/2025

Brushcutting can be a bit challenging but rewarding when done properly. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and effective while using a brush cutter:

1. Wear Proper Safety Gear

  • Helmet/Face Shield: Protects your head and face from debris. When you select our Gold package with our Brushcutters anti-glare goggles come as standard.
  • Gloves: Offers grip and hand protection.
  • Long Pants & Sturdy Boots: Prevents injuries from flying debris and brush.
  • Ear Protection: Brushcutters can be loud, so ear protection is essential.

2. Choose the Right Blade

  • Different blades are designed for different tasks. Use a metal blade for thick brush and woody plants and a nylon string for lighter grass.

3. Master the Right Stance

  • Feet Shoulder-Width Apart: Keep your stance stable and balanced.
  • Bend Your Knees Slightly: This helps reduce fatigue and maintains stability.
  • Grip: Hold the handles firmly with both hands to control the brush cutter. Don’t overgrip, as it can lead to fatigue.

4. Adjust the Height of the Brush Cutter

  • Keep the cutter just above the ground (a few inches) to ensure you're cutting efficiently while avoiding hitting rocks and soil, which can damage the blade.

5. Use the Right Motion

  • Swing in an Arc: Move the brush cutter in a gentle arc from left to right. This will allow you to cut in a sweeping motion, improving your control and efficiency.
  • Avoid Overloading the Cutter: Take your time and let the blade do the work instead of forcing it through dense areas.

6. Work in Sections

  • Break your work into smaller sections. Don’t try to clear a large area all at once. Take breaks when needed.

7. Stay Aware of Obstacles

  • Watch out for rocks, tree stumps, and other hard objects that can damage the blade or cause injury.

8. Start Slowly

  • When first starting out, go slow and gradually increase your speed as you gain confidence and experience.

9. Keep the Brush Cutter Maintained

  • Regularly check the blade for dullness or wear. A sharp blade makes cutting easier and safer.
  • Clean out any debris that might get stuck in the blade area.

10. Know When to Take Breaks

  • Brush cutting can be physically demanding, so take breaks to avoid fatigue. It will also help maintain your focus and prevent accidents.

With practice, you'll get the hang of it! Brushcutting can be a great way to clear overgrown areas, but safety is always the top priority.
