Checking Your Lawn Mower Before The Cutting Season

11/03/2025

Checking your lawnmower before the cutting season is a great way to ensure it runs smoothly when you need it. Here’s a checklist to help you prepare it for the upcoming season:

1. Check the Oil

  • Oil Level: Make sure the oil is at the right level. If it’s low or dirty, change it.
  • Oil Type: Make sure you’re using the right oil for your lawnmower’s engine (typically SAE 30 for warm weather).
  • Oil Change: If you didn’t change the oil at the end of the last season, it’s time to do so.

2. Inspect the Air Filter

  • Clean or Replace: If the air filter is dirty, clean it or replace it if necessary. A clean air filter helps the engine run smoothly.

3. Check the Spark Plug

  • Inspect: Remove the spark plug and check for wear and tear. If it looks corroded or damaged, replace it.
  • Clean: If the spark plug is still in good condition, you can clean it gently with a wire brush.

4. Inspect the Blade

  • Sharpen or Replace: A dull blade will tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly. Check the blade for damage, sharpen it, or replace it if necessary.
  • Tighten: Make sure the blade is securely fastened.

5. Check the Fuel System

  • Old Gas: If you have leftover gas from last season, drain it out and replace it with fresh fuel. Old fuel can cause engine problems.
  • Fuel Filter: If your mower has a fuel filter, inspect it and replace it if necessary.

6. Inspect the Tires

  • Air Pressure: Check the tire pressure and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended levels. Low tire pressure can affect mowing performance.
  • Wear and Tear: Check the tires for cracks or excessive wear. If they’re damaged, consider replacing them.

7. Clean the Mower

  • Deck: Clean the grass clippings and dirt from the mower deck. This will help prevent buildup and improve airflow.
  • Exterior: Wipe down the exterior of the mower to remove any grime that may have accumulated over time.

8. Inspect the Cables and Belts

  • Cables: Check for any fraying or damage to the cables.
  • Belts: Inspect the belts to make sure they’re not cracked or worn out. Replace them if necessary.

9. Test Run

  • Once you've gone through all the checks, start the mower and let it run for a few minutes. Pay attention to any strange sounds, vibrations, or issues that may require further attention.

By going through these steps, you’ll be all set to get the lawnmower up and running smoothly when it’s time to start cutting!
