Which Log Splitter is Best for Me?

03/01/2014

Winter has arrived, so it’s definitely time to get those logs ready for the fire and wood burner.

Instead of spending hours in the garden with an axe splitting logs, why not upgrade this year to a log splitter which will do the work for you.

A log splitter doesn’t cut the logs in half the way an axe would. A log splitter uses hydraulics to drive a wedge, which rams against the log using strength instead of speed. This splits it into smaller logs, taking most of the work away from you.

When it comes to choosing an electric or petrol log splitter which one is right for your needs?

There are a number of different log splitters on the market including electric, petrol, horizontal and vertical log splitters which are perfect for heavy duty jobs and can handle a wider range of log sizes.

Electric log splitters are easier to maintain than a petrol log splitter. They can be used inside your garage or shed and are generally the most suitable for the majority of households. Petrol log splitters can be slightly more powerful, but they cannot be used inside because of their fumes.

The different log sizes that you can split really depend on the hardness of the wood and the diameter of the log. If you are planning on cutting hard wood or a larger diameter and thickness of wood, then you will need a higher tonnage on your log splitter.

The tonnage is the pressure that is used to split the wood. It’s important to know the type of wood that you are planning to cut and the diameter before you purchase the log splitter, which can range from 4 tonnes upwards.

If your goal is to split smaller logs of up to 25cm, then a 6 - 7 ton electric log splitter is the one for you. If your goal is splitting larger logs of around 60cm, then you’re looking at the much larger log splitters such as the 10 ton petrol log splitter.

There are a number of different woods that you can use for your log splitter which include sycamore, holly and hawthorn. Pine is also an excellent wood that can be easily split with your log splitter. Beech and ash are also a good choice.

Like any high powered machinery, care should always be taken when using a log splitter - make sure that you wear protective goggles to protect your eyes and thick work gloves to protect your hands.

Using a log splitter can definitely be a great addition to any household, small holding or farmland. We stock a veriety of log splitters for home use or for professional grounds people.
